Reading to children or encouraging your children to read is one of the best activities a parent can do to facilitate good reading skills. Good reading skills will provide many opportunities throughout your children’s lives and quite likely into and throughout adulthood. Reading is a perfect way to entertain the brain, relax and enjoy a cold or rainy day, or simply to unwind from a hurried day.
Reading increases a child’s aptitude, promotes excellent verbal and/or language skills via written forms of communication, and allows their minds to soar to new heights. In fact, if you’re reading this post, you’ve probably established that I L-O-V-E reading just about as much as I enjoy writing. As a elementary classroom teacher, I taught my students the importance of reading and how much it could bring into their lives by utilizing books to create learning opportunities that were more like an adventure than a learning experience. My own children benefited from my love of books as they had an extensive home library that grew as did their ages. Today, my sons L-O-V-E to read and have excelled in reading and writing competency (all subjects for that matter).
As a teacher and mom, I wrote children’s books that complimented lessons and/or activities that we were focused upon. One such book is, Liver for Dinner which was utilized when teaching my class about healthy eating habits for children. The first part of the book is a whimsical tale of a young boy who dreamed of eating pizza, lasagna or even spaghetti (his favorite food) as a special reward for doing his chores but instead was served “liver” by his mom for dinner. Needless to say he wasn’t happy about it but nevertheless ate what he was served or did he??? The back of the book contains information on healthy eating habits and appropriate food or serving sizes for children.
I’m happy to share that the book, Liver for Dinner, has been published and is available for sale on various
